Things You Never Knew About the Psychic Senses
Updated: Aug 7
Do a search on the web and you'll find countless pages talking about the psychic senses (clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, claircognizance). I especially hate it when people refer to them as the "clairs". I don't know why, but it just irks the shit out of me. I promise you that this article will be far better than any of those copy/pasted/parroted/AI generated/poor excuses for articles that you've wasted your time and energy reading because I have yet to find anyone who has written about this topic and there's an extremely high probability that anything you find was probably written (read copied from here) after this article was published.
I'm going to cover the BASIC FOUR psychic senses listed above, but I'm not going to include the lame-ass ones dealing with psychic smells and tastes. Sure those two are legit, but they really don't contribute much when compared to the vast amount of information you get from the other psychic senses. "But I can smell roses!!" Wow. Big fucking deal. Now pull my finger and tell me what you smell...
There are even some people who "make-up", give a name and/or try to re-label other psychic abilities because they need to stroke their ego and want to coin a "new" word for other New Age poseurs. In a search, I found pages talking about the 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 "clairs". Give me a fucking break. If you want to roll your eyes at one of the lightsiders that created new ones, here you go (if the link ever breaks, here's a PDF below for posterity).
It's evident that she's making shit up when you read the sections where she mentions these ""new" clairs" more than once and then she uses that biggest bullshit keyword for lightsiders - "ascension". What irritates me even more is that she has (at the time of this article) 880 facebook likes from people...I mean sheep, who are clueless and think this lady is really onto something. But I guess I can play along and invent a new "clair":
Clairidiocy - When I intuitively know that someone is a fucking idiot without ever having met them.
I wrote this because I needed a way to organize and conceptualize a nebulous topic which facilitates learning and practicing. I decided to share it in the hopes that it helps someone else learn what's going on in the background and improve their skills.
Let's start by briefly talking about yin and yang. This isn't going to be some deep, philosophical discussion on the Tao. Simply stated, yin and yang represent the duality down here. Dark and light, female and male, contraction and expansion, inwards and outwards, shrinking and growing, depression and anger, internal and external, etc. You get the point? You can't have one without the other. Since duality exists down here on earth, it is embedded in everything whether or not you're aware of it.
That being said, there are two primary ways you can utilize a psychic sense to acquire information: The yin way or the yang way. The yin way can be as simple as just sitting there with the intention of receiving the correct information and letting the psychic hit come to you. You didn't reach out or exert any energy. Another way this can be done is to imagine a black hole gently pulling things into itself. It's not exerting any extra force outside of its boundaries to grab things. It's just ever-so-gently pulling inwards and when something is within its reach (psychic hits), it will eventually arrive at the center (you).
The yang way is the opposite (duh). You exert your energy to reach out, find and grab what you need. It's much more forceful and takes far more energy. Not many people can operate for extended periods doing yang psychic work unless they have an exceptionally large repository of qi.
In addition to that, there are two ways that information from a psychic sense can manifest or be presented (and they're both subsets of yin/yang): Internally and externally.
How each psychic sense is utilized and how the information is presented to you boils down to how you were trained to do it and/or how you naturally learned to do it by yourself. And yes, you can train yourself to learn the other method and I would advise anyone looking to work professionally in this field to take the time to do so.
Acquisition of information utilizing CLAIRVOYANCE (seeing):
Example 1 - The YIN version: You're sitting there quietly. Your mind is clear. All of a sudden, a vision comes to you of your mom and a carrot cake (regardless of whether you saw it in your mind's eye or with your physical eyes). Fifteen minutes later (or an hour, a day - whatever), your mom knocks at your door and she's holding a carrot cake she baked for you.
You were sitting there and the thought came to you. All you had to do was be receptive. The clearer your mind is, the easier it is for clear information to come through.
Example 2 - The YANG version: You're sitting there quietly. Your mind is clear. You wonder what your mom is doing today, so you close your eyes and "reach out" to "see" what she's doing.
You exerted energy to extend outwards and find your mom. This required much more energy and concentration to focus on your target. This is also a type of bi-location and is often used in "Western" Remote Viewing. I highly suggest you read my other article for a more in-depth analysis of this.
How the information is presented to you:
If you see visions, auras and spirits/entities in your mind's eye, well that's internal clairvoyance. If you can see visions, auras and spirits/entities with your physical eyes, that's external clairvoyance. In my time spent around a lot of psychics, internal clairvoyance seems to be the easiest way to receive information due to the distractions that the physical eyes pickup, but then again, not everyone shared with me the manner in which they "saw" what they were "seeing". Now let's look at examples of how these two manifest.
Example 1 - INTERNAL version: You are scanning someone's energy field. In your mind's eye, you can see the colors of their aura and discolorations around energetic blockages that they have.
Example 2 - The EXTERNAL version: You are scanning someone's energy field. With your physical eyes, you can see the colors of their aura and discolorations around energetic blockages that they have.
Acquisition of information utilizing CLAIRAUDIENCE (hearing):
Example 1 - The YIN version: You're sitting there quietly. Your mind is clear. All of a sudden, you hear a spirit/entity say your name (regardless of whether you heard it in your head or outside of your head).
You were sitting there with a clear, quiet mind and the sound came to you.
Example 2 - The YANG version: You're sitting there quietly. Your mind is clear. You sense that a spirit/entity is trying to communicate with you, but due to all of the uncontrolled thought and psychic noise on this planet, you are having difficulty "hearing" it. You focus your concentration to tune-out irrelevant information and once you get a hit on the energetic frequency of what you're wanting to hear, you exert your energy to get "closer" to it and to "amplify" it. The auditory information is presented to you much louder and clearer as a result (regardless of whether you heard it in your head or outside of your head).
You exerted energy to extend outwards to find and amplify the auditory information. This required much more energy and concentration.
How the information is presented to you:
If you hear spirits/entities and information through your internal "ears", well that's internal clairaudience. If you hear spirits/entities and information through your external ears, well that's external clairaudience. Unfortunately, I don't have any hard data to share about what percentage of psychics receive their clairaudient information internally or externally. Now let's look at examples of how these two manifest.
Example 1 - INTERNAL version: You're on vacation in Sedona and decide to sit near the vortex at Oak Creek. You plop your ass into your camping chair with a metaphysical book and notice that nobody is around you for as far as you can see or hear. Minutes after you finally get into your book, you hear what sounds like a pissed off lion roaring inside your head and you jump because it startles the shit out of you.
Example 2 - The EXTERNAL version: You're on vacation in Sedona and decide to sit near the vortex at Oak Creek. You plop your ass into your camping chair with a metaphysical book and notice that nobody is around you for as far as you can see or hear. Minutes after you finally get into your book, you hear what sounds like a pissed off lion roar a few inches from your right ear and you jump because it startles the shit out of you. (This external version actually happened to me many years ago).
Acquisition of information utilizing CLAIRSENTIENCE (feeling):
Example 1 - The YIN version: You arrive at a "haunted" house that you're also going to be staying at for the weekend. As you walk into the living area, you stand there and ensure your mind/energy body is calm/quiet. You notice that you feel pressure/pain in your chest and your breathing becomes labored and very constricted. The owner of the house later confirms that a previous tenant was a heavy smoker, had emphysema and died of a heart attack in this room. (This actually happened to me a few years ago and the information was presented to me internally and externally).
You walked in, quieted yourself, became receptive and the sensations came to you.
Example 2 - The YANG version: You arrive at a "haunted" house that you're also going to be staying at for the weekend. As you sit in your car in front of the house, you extend your awareness into the house to try to pick up information about any of the rooms. After a few minutes of reaching out, you sense latent energetic patterns and areas of heavier energy at a particular couch in the living room. You notice that you feel pressure/pain in your chest and your breathing becomes labored and very constricted.
You sent your consciousness/energy into a particular place, put your feelers out to sense something and you did just as if you were physically there.
How the information is presented to you:
If you feel energy flows/blockages, spirits/entities, emotions and/or other information through your energetic body, well that's internal clairsentience. This might feel like various emotions, pressure, tingles, buzzing, warmth, coolth (yes, this is a real word - read a book!!), butterflies, contractions (like when your solar plexus chakra slams shut), expansions (as if your energy field is being inflated), dizziness, nausea etc.
If you feel energy flows/blockages, spirits/entities, emotions and/or other information through your physical body, well that's external clairsentience. This can feel just like some of the above examples, but tend to manifest more in the physical body such as pain, dizziness, nausea, headaches, tingles, heat, coolth, pressure, etc. I personally receive this information both ways as it seems that clairsentience information tends to overlap and blend the internal and external. Now let's look at examples of how these two manifest.
Example 1 - INTERNAL/EXTERNAL overlap and blending: You're doing mediumship work and waiting for the spirit to communicate how he/she died. After a few minutes of quieting your mind and calming your energetic body, you feel a rush of anxiety and panic. You feel a wave of cold fear pass through you. All of this starts to manifest in the physical as they are tightly bound together, so you feel a tightness around your neck increase with each passing second. Your lungs have difficulty functioning normally as you violently gasp for air, cough and choke. Your heart beats like you're jogging. Tears stream forth. (This happened to me while driving down the fucking highway years ago thanks to the lack of common sense and courtesy from the spirits other side).
Example 2 - INTERNAL/EXTERNAL overlap and blending: Your physical body is asleep, but your mind is fully conscious and awake. You can feel your astral body hovering slightly outside of your physical. You feel the presence of spirits around you. One of the spirits grabs your physical foot for an unknown reason and scares the shit out of you, snapping you back into your body. You look at your foot and although there isn't anything physically there, the remnants of an energetic touch linger in the place that was grabbed.
Acquisition of information utilizing CLAIRCOGNIZANCE (knowing):
Example 1 - The YIN version: You're laying there (because you're tired of sitting) in a light trance. Suddenly, you have an epiphany to a question that has been bugging you for a week regarding the connection you have with your new boss. You instantly know and understand why he takes such good care of you and why you can do no wrong in his eyes. (This happened to me years ago and it was due to the fact that my boss at the time had been my older brother in another lifetime we shared and he always looked out for me. He wasn't aware of our connection consciously in this lifetime, but the love transcended time/space).
Example 2 - The YANG version: You're laying there (because you're tired of sitting) in a light trance. You're seeking information regarding the connection you have with your new boss. You extend your consciousness and tap into the "akashic records", the universal consciousness, Source or whatever the fuck you want to call it. It takes a minute of focused exertion, but you eventually "arrive" to the information about the other lifetimes you have shared with him.
How the information is presented to you:
If you instantly know information without having done anything, that's internal claircognizance. When I first started writing this, I didn't have an example for external claircognizance and it stumped me for quite some time. I thought that perhaps it was because there really wasn't an external manifestation of claircognizance. After sitting with it (the answer came to me via the yin version lol) and discussing it with my amazing wife, I've come to the conclusion that the external presentation can manifest as a synchronicity sometimes (but not all synchronicities are external manifestations of claircognizance). There are varying opinions of what synchronicities are, but that's for another article.
If you ignore or aren't sensitive enough to receive the information internally, it can manifest externally in a synchronicity which is usually accompanied by something along the lines of "Shit, I KNEW this!" or "I doubted my first impressions, but this confirms that I was right all along".
Example 1 - INTERNAL version: You randomly meet someone at a party and after shaking his hand, you instantly despise him, but you don't know why. Later, your friend tells you that she dated this guy many years ago and he treated her like shit throughout their relationship. Simple enough.
Example 2 - The EXTERNAL version: The engine in your car seems a little "off", but you can't quite put your finger on it. You ignore it because you're too busy to get into the mechanic. You're in a strange part of town and take a wrong turn. You pull into the parking lot (that just so happens to belong to an auto mechanic shop) to do a 3-point turn in a parking space to go back the other way. The parking spot faces the wall of the shop and on the wall is a huge poster that says "Have you checked your engine?". This actually happened to me a decade ago. I ignored my knowing that had been presented to me internally and the universe ensured that I had an external source of knowing for my own confirmation through a synchronicity.
Another example that my wife and I have experienced too many times was knowing that there was a spirit in our house, but the external manifestation of our claircognizance was seeing or experiencing the spirit manipulate the physical world by flipping the light switch, opening the garage door, opening the patio door, turning off our A/C, moving items, etc.
So what's the takeaway here? If you want to enhance your skillset, you can try learning how to acquire psychic information utilizing the polarity of what you're used to. I prefer to use whatever method expends the least amount of energy and/or comes most easily to me, but it's nice to be able to know that I can utilize other methods to get the same psychic information. It allows me to be much more versatile when I'm doing shamanic work. Considering I spent a lot of time writing this and I dumped half a mug of yerba mate all over my favorite shirt in the process, I sure as shit hope someone appreciates it.
